Introduction
The Graduate School of Economics plays a significant role in economics education and research. The graduate programs present students with an opportunity to pursue advanced studies and conduct original research.
The objective of the graduate program is to develop human resources equipped with the knowledge, critical thinking, methodological approach and analytical skills necessary to pursue promising careers in industry, government, academic and non-academic institutions, both in Japan and overseas.
New graduates from the five undergraduate programs and the Expert Course, as well as qualified professionals with the desire to pursue graduate studies, and foreign students fulfilling the applicable admission requirements are strongly encouraged to apply for admission to the Graduate School of Economics.
Brief Historical Review of the Graduate School of Economics
| April 1966 | The Graduate School of Economics was founded in April 1966 with a Master’s course in Theoretical Economics and Economic History, which developed from the Management Accounting major, dating back to April 1957. The history of the Graduate School of Economics is linked to the Economics Department at the Faculty of Economics, which facilitated the establishment of Wakayama University as the only national university in Wakayama prefecture in 1949. |

| April 1968 | In conjunction with the addition of the Business Administration major in 1968, the Theoretical Economics and Economic History major was restructured into the Economics major. |
| April 1999 | The current Master’s program based on three majors is the outcome of the inclusion in April 1999 of the new major, Market Environment, which was created in response to the growing and complex dynamics of markets in economic and business activities. |
| April 2021 | The Graduate School of Economics is reorganized from three majors to single major with eight educational programs. |
Research and Education
The objectives of the educational and research programs at the Graduate School of Economics are manifold. The principal aim is to develop human resources capable of understanding the increasingly complex needs of the society, and produce advanced research with positive impact on economic and social life.
Excellence in research and re-education programs is conducive to the development of future researchers and professionals with string expertise in many fields of economic studies who desire to pursue not only academic careers but also in industry and government institutions, among others.
Certified Tax Accountant
Subject to approval from the National Tax Council, it is possible for students who successfully completed specific courses in accounting and law at the Graduate School of Economics, to obtain to upon graduation a partial exemption from tax law and accounting examinations.
